This song was first written by Brady four years ago, while living in New York. The main acoustic guitar groove, which began as a warm-up type of exercise for the right hand, very clearly issued the lyric "shotgun". From there, it was a matter of attaching the right pieces to create a full song from the one simple building block. The song did not make it onto the 2018 album 'Violins', as it was deemed under-developed. It still boasted a strong musical idea, at its core, which kept it alive up until the forming of Long Shadow Sheep. "Shotgun" was then revitalized and quickly realized, prior to the recording of the iZotope Sessions. Despite its three years of quiet dormancy, it shows very little signs of change from the original version.
lyrics
I think I'll take the bait,
sleeping through Sunday.
But this is not the day for that -
no, not by a bear's nap,
not by a bird's map.
I think I need a penny to get me down the turnpike,
a steady hand to swing my fingers right.
So, light me up a cigarette, I'd like a say in the way I die.
Deaf, dumb & blind, I need a reason not to run -
I think I need a shotgun.
So hand me the chopsticks,
there's a fly I'd like to feast on.
Shotgun,
aiming at the bygones
to justify the long-con.
An eye for an eye, gone.
Diamond,
bloody in the red sun.
Oh, honey, who'd you kill for that?
& where's the body at?
But I'll spare the change,
because the money makes the man go down in flames
and I'm scared to let this air balloon inflate.
I trust only the earth to bear my weight.
Oh no, I think we took the bait,
sleeping through Sunday,
while at the gun range, we wait.
& oh no, isn't it such a bore
to not be not normal anymore?
& so accounted for
But, watch me try
to dig for breadcrumbs that I meant to leave behind,
to realize getting high was just a nightmare in disguise.
Deaf dumb & blind, I found a reason not to run -
I think I solved the problem.
I think I hear the skin drums, the canons spitting bombs.
So hand me those chopsticks,
theres a fly I'd like to feast on.
Shotgun,
aiming at the bygones
to justify the long-con.
& I'll try to change,
because the flying man is falling, all the same.
& when I've lived a thousand years, then safely I will say,
"I think I'll be a millionaire, today."
