Houdini was a bold endeavor. Far bolder than I anticipated when I decided to include it on the album. This song plagued me for the 3 long months that it took to record and mix. It was during this time that I was forced to relearn many concepts of recording and mixing audio, and it changed my entire process and mindset as a mixing engineer. I had such a clear idea of what I wanted it to sound like, but with all of its contrasting sections and dynamic changes, my ears could never seem to agree with my mind. But, I believed in this long, strange song enough to see it all the way through. It is the most recently written song to appear on the album, and I felt I needed to include it alongside the older songs that make up Violins. Maybe it sounds good, maybe its a mess. Decide for yourself. I have heard it so many times now, that I have lost all perspective on how it sounds. Welp, lesson learned.
